The Comox Valley

Is bordered on the west by the Beaufort Mountains (contains the Comox Glacier and Strathcona Park) & on the east by Strait of Georgia. The valley extends south to Fanny Bay and north to the Oyster River. Within these boundaries are the townships of Courtenay, Comox, and Cumberland.

The main tourism attractions in the area (all within 1/2 hr drive of Courtenay) are: Skiing on Mount Washington - Downhill & Cross Country. Salt Water Sport Fishing in Georgia Strait - mainly Salmon, Cod, & Snapper. Golfing - 7 courses, (four 18 hole and three 9 hole). There are 2 more Championship golf courses in the planning stages scheduled to be operating by 2009, and a 27 hole Championship course planned for nearby Union Bay.

The Regional District of Comox-Strathcona

In 2001 Statistics Canada reported a total population of 96,131 people in the district. The townships of Courtenay, Comox, & Cumberland were home to 34% of these people (approx.31,000). Current estimates are that Courtenay's population will have increased as much as 30% since the last census. If so, Courtenay would likely surpass Campbell River as the districts largest population. The addition of direct flights into Comox airport plus the arrival of the "big box" retailers certainly support that assumption. The largest employer in the area is Canadian Forces Base (CFB) 19 Wing Comox. Crown Isle Resort & Golf Community with over 200 employees, in season, is the 10th largest employer.
